Pisces: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Pisces is mutable water and the last thirty degrees of the zodiac, with two rulers that enlarge different things: Jupiter widens the scope, Neptune removes the boundary. Permeability is an input strategy, not a weakness.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Pisces is

Pisces is the last thirty degrees of the zodiac. At 29 degrees and 59 minutes the count runs out and the next minute is 0° Aries, the vernal point everything else is measured from. That does real work in the reading: a mutable sign closes a season, and this one closes the season and the cycle at once.

Water registers a situation as a feeling before a fact. Mutable water adapts to whatever it registers, so the boundary between the reading and the reader is thin by design. Pisces takes in more of other people's states than it can filter, and loses the line between itself and whatever it is attending to.

The natural correspondence is the twelfth house: solitude, sleep, institutions, and the parts of a person met only indirectly. Venus is exalted here — a body concerned with what is worth having, in the sign where outlines dissolve.

03Strengths

  • +Understands from inside. Reconstructs a person's position from within it, including a position it disagrees with.
  • +Forgives usefully. Holds what someone did without organising the rest of the relationship around it afterwards.
  • +Works with the unbuilt. Handles things that do not exist yet — images, music, possibilities — fluently.
  • +Sits with the unresolved. Stays with a question that has no answer instead of forcing one for the relief.

04Frictions

  • −Porous boundaries. Absorbs the mood of a room and cannot always work out afterwards which part of it was its own.
  • −Avoids the hard edge. Leaves the factual conversation — money, dates, terms — until it has become an emergency.
  • −Rescues past capacity. Keeps supplying someone who is not changing, at a cost it does not track until it is spent.
  • −Escapes instead of saying it. Withdraws into sleep, screens or fantasy at the point where one plain sentence would have settled it.

05Pisces as a Sun sign

The Sun in Pisces builds identity around what it can take in and give back — the person who understood, who made the thing that was not there before. It spends about a month in each sign, which is why a birth date alone places it, and why it is the only placement a date places.

06Pisces as a Moon sign

The Moon in Pisces settles by dissolving the edge for a while: music, sleep, water, a long stretch of unstructured time. That works, and it is not a failure. The cost is that the same mechanism is there when a plain conversation would have been the shorter route. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days.

07Pisces rising

Rising in Pisces meets people softly and adaptively: the manner takes on some of theirs, which makes for easy company and leaves its own outline hard to see. The Ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic on the eastern horizon at birth.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Two rulers, enlarging different things

Pisces is the third sign whose rulership was never reconciled, after Scorpio and Aquarius, and the subtlest of the three because both candidates expand something.

Jupiter is the classical ruler, holding Sagittarius and Pisces under the same two-signs-per-planet arithmetic that produced the rest of the table. It enlarges scope: how much is included, how far the frame reaches, what the case for saying yes looks like. Neptune was discovered in 1846 and assigned afterwards, and it does not enlarge the frame — it removes the edge of it.

Those are different operations. A Jupiter reading of Pisces produces a sign whose compassion is wide; a Neptune reading, one whose compassion has no boundary — a different claim with different costs, and the second friction above belongs to the Neptune version rather than the Jupiter one.

The mechanical difference matters too. Jupiter takes about twelve years to circle the zodiac, a year per sign, which makes its sign a fact about a birth year. Neptune takes about 165 years, roughly fourteen in a sign, which makes it generational: everyone born across fourteen years shares it, and in a natal chart the house says far more than the sign. Lizastro prints both rulers and marks which is which.

09The same sign, twelve different houses

Which house Pisces falls on depends on the birth time and place. On the second cusp, value is hard to price: what a thing is worth moves with the mood it is assessed in. On the sixth, routine resists a schedule and is rebuilt around energy rather than clock time. On the tenth, the public role has blurred edges, and other people describe the work more confidently than the person doing it.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

10Compatibility, honestly

The element rule is geometry. Pisces is 120 degrees from Cancer and Scorpio, a trine, and 60 degrees from the earth signs Taurus and Capricorn, a sextile. Virgo is opposite at 180 degrees — the measurable against the unmeasurable, one axis. Gemini and Sagittarius are square, the other two mutable signs.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Pisces is not

Pisces is not weak-willed. Mutable water describes permeability, which is an input strategy: more of the surrounding state gets through, and less of it is filtered on the way in. The caricature moralises that into an output failure — as if taking a room in accurately were the same as being unable to refuse it.

They are separate questions, and the chart does not settle the second. Absorbing the mood is the placement; what a person does about it depends on the rest of the chart and on everything the chart does not contain.
