Libra: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Libra is cardinal air ruled by Venus, begins at the autumn equinox, and is the only sign whose symbol is a tool rather than a creature. Weighing is its method, not a failure of its method.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Libra is

Libra begins at the autumn equinox. At 0° Libra the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south and day and night are the same length, so the balance in the symbol is an astronomical measurement before it is a moral one. It is also the only sign whose image is an object rather than a creature. The scales are an instrument, and an instrument implies a method.

The method is comparison. Air puts distance between itself and an experience in order to describe it; cardinal opens a cycle. Cardinal air therefore initiates by comparing: it sets two things side by side and finds out what the difference is worth. Libra thinks in relationships, and judges a choice by what it does to the balance between people.

Venus rules it: value decided by comparison, in a sign whose natural correspondence is the seventh house — one-to-one relationship by agreement. Saturn is exalted here too: the body of limits and long commitments, welcomed in the sign of agreements.

03Strengths

  • +Holds two positions. Can state an opposing argument in a form the person holding it would recognise and accept.
  • +Lowers the temperature. De-escalates a disagreement without pretending it was not a disagreement.
  • +Composes an environment. Arranges rooms, documents and events so that they are easier to be inside.
  • +Keeps the relationship in view. Remembers that winning the point and keeping the working partnership are two separate outcomes.

04Frictions

  • −Defers the decision. Waits until circumstances make the choice, then treats the outcome as something that happened to it.
  • −Agreement that is not agreement. Says yes to keep the peace and pays for it later in a resentment the other person could not see coming.
  • −Preference outsourced. Loses track of what it wants as soon as the question becomes what somebody else wants.
  • −Politeness costs the truth. Leaves a real objection unsaid because saying it would make the room uncomfortable for an hour.

05Libra as a Sun sign

The Sun in Libra builds identity around fairness and being in relation: the person who holds both sides, arranges the terms, and is judged by the agreements they keep. The Sun covers about a degree a day, which is why a birth date fixes it — and why it is the only placement a date fixes.

06Libra as a Moon sign

The Moon in Libra settles when the room is settled: what it needs is an absence of unresolved tension between people nearby, which outsources its own state to conditions it does not control. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days.

07Libra rising

Rising in Libra meets people by accommodating them: register adjusted, attention on what the other person needs to hear — which leaves its own position invisible for a long time. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at birth.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Venus, and the two signs she rules

Rulership is a dignity relationship rather than possession: the body operates on its own terms in that sign. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and the pair shows how much the element does. Venus decides what is worth having; in Taurus, an earth sign, she answers by holding a thing and finding out whether it lasts. In Libra, an air sign, she answers by comparison — against the alternative, against a standard, against what somebody else thinks. Same function; the earth version accumulates and the air version arranges.

09The same sign, twelve different houses

Which house Libra falls on depends on the birth time and place. On the second cusp, what a thing is worth is what it is worth relative to something else. On the sixth, the working day is arranged so it is bearable to be inside — an aesthetic applied to routine. On the tenth, the public role is a mediating one, and the reputation is built on being the person both sides will talk to.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

10Compatibility, honestly

Libra corresponds to the seventh house — what happens in the presence of one other person — so this is the sign where the question deserves a straight answer, with the arithmetic.

Sign-to-sign compatibility is aspect geometry applied to whole thirty-degree arcs. Signs sharing an element are 120 degrees apart, a trine, which the tradition treats as the easy contact: Libra with Gemini and Aquarius. Complementary elements — air with fire — are 60 degrees apart, a sextile. Signs sharing a modality are 90 or 180 degrees apart: Libra is square Cancer and Capricorn and opposite Aries, all four cardinal. The elements are a summary of the angles, and the angles are the technique.

Then the honest part: that technique is being run on one point per person. Two Suns are two data points in a comparison that has, between two full charts, on the order of a hundred contacts — Moon to Moon, Venus to Mars, each planet against the other's angles, each with an orb deciding how much it counts. Aries and Libra sit opposite, and the shorthand calls that a clash while an actual comparison might find Aries Venus exactly on Libra Moon and read the pair completely differently.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Libra is not

Libra is not indecisive. Cardinal air initiates through comparison: weighing is the method, not a failure of it, and putting the options against each other takes the time it takes.

The real cost is listed above as deferring the decision — waiting long enough that circumstances choose, then treating the result as something that happened rather than something decided. That is not slowness but a transfer of authorship, expensive precisely because the weighing was done properly and then not used.
