Aries: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Aries is cardinal fire ruled by Mars, and it is also the first thirty degrees of the zodiac — the zero every other position is measured from. What that machinery describes, what it does not, and how to check whether the Sun was really there.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Aries is

Aries is the first thirty degrees of the tropical zodiac, measured from the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north. That is not decoration: every longitude in a chart is counted from 0° Aries, so the sign is the zero of the whole coordinate system.

Three pieces of machinery make it what it is. Fire is the element that commits to a thing before it has finished assessing it. Cardinal is the mode that opens a season — Aries begins spring, and a cardinal sign is most itself at the start of something. Mars is the body that describes how a person spends effort and what they are willing to defend. Put the three together and you get a sign that meets a situation by moving first and correcting afterwards.

The interesting material is not the starting. It is the gap between starting and finishing, and that gap is a modality question rather than a character flaw. Opening a cycle and completing one are different jobs, and the zodiac hands them to different signs.

03Strengths

  • +Starts things. Begins before the plan is finished, which is frequently the only reason the work begins at all.
  • +Says it out loud. States a disagreement in the room rather than carrying it home unspoken.
  • +Short recovery. Loses interest in a defeat quickly and is available for the next attempt.
  • +Acts without a quorum. Does not need a group to agree before taking the first step.

04Frictions

  • −Skips the middle. Interest drops between the decision and the finish, so somebody else inherits the last eighty percent.
  • −Same heat for everything. Brings as much force to a minor irritation as to a real threat, and the people nearby cannot tell which is which.
  • −Reads slowness as obstruction. Treats someone who is still thinking as someone standing in the way.
  • −Expensive reversals. Commits early enough that a later change of course throws away work already paid for.

05Aries as a Sun sign

The Sun is the part of a chart that wants to be a particular person rather than an average one. In Aries it orients around being first: an identity assembled out of initiative. The Sun travels about a degree a day and stays in a sign for a month, which is why a birth date alone places it — and why it is the only placement a date alone can give. It is one of ten bodies.

06Aries as a Moon sign

The Moon describes what settles a person, not what they aim at. In Aries it settles through action: the discomfort drops as soon as something is being done, and waiting is the expensive state. Fast recovery and a short fuse are the same mechanism from two sides. The Moon covers about thirteen degrees a day and changes sign every two and a half days, so unlike the Sun it cannot be read off a date.

07Aries rising

Rising in Aries reads as speed on arrival: quick greeting, quick opinion, and a physical directness people register before much has been said, which looks like confidence whether or not any is present. The rising sign is the degree of the ecliptic standing on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, so it is a fact about the time and place rather than the date.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Mars, and what "ruled by" means

Rulership is a dignity relationship, not ownership. Mars is said to rule Aries because it operates on its own terms there: the sign's method and the planet's function are the same shape, so nothing needs translating. The practical consequence is that Mars carries more weight here than in most charts: its sign, house and aspects modify the reading directly, and a Mars in Pisces produces a very different Aries from a Mars in Capricorn.

Mars asks how a person goes after what they want and how they defend themselves. It circles the zodiac in about two years and turns retrograde for roughly eleven weeks in each of those cycles, which makes it a personal body: its sign says something about an individual rather than about everyone born that decade.

09The same sign, twelve different houses

A sign is a stretch of sky. A house is an area of life. Which house a sign lands on depends on the birth time and place, so the same Aries does different work in different charts. On the second house cusp it puts the initiative into earning and spending. On the seventh it describes partnership approached at speed and often chosen quickly. On the tenth it makes the public role the place where the first move gets made.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

10Compatibility, honestly

Sign compatibility is aspect geometry applied to whole signs. Signs that share an element sit 120 degrees apart, a trine: Aries with Leo and Sagittarius. Fire and air signs sit 60 degrees apart, a sextile, which is the second easy contact. The four cardinal signs — Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn — are 90 or 180 degrees from each other, squares and one opposition, which is the whole reason they are described as difficult together. They all want to open something, in four different mediums.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Aries is not

Aries is not angry. Anger is what the caricature does with the fact that Mars is fast, but the placement describes latency rather than temperature — how little time passes between a stimulus and a response. A short latency looks like temper when the response happens to be anger and like courage when it happens to be action. It is the same measurement in both cases.
