Taurus: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Taurus is fixed earth ruled by Venus, which makes it a sign about what is worth keeping rather than a sign about comfort. The mechanism, the costs it carries, and why the boundary dates in the table are not reliable.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Taurus is

Taurus is the fixed sign of spring, and fixed is a position in the season before it is a temperament. A cardinal sign opens a season, a mutable sign hands it over, and a fixed sign sits in the middle where nothing is being started and nothing surrendered. The only job left is to hold. Taurus builds slowly toward something it can keep, and resists being hurried.

Venus is the body that decides what is worth having and how to go about being wanted in return. Run through earth, that question becomes concrete: value in the money sense and in the taste sense. The second house, the natural correspondence, covers income, possessions, usable skills and self-worth — a list that looks like four topics until you notice it is one.

The Moon is exalted in Taurus. The body of need and habit is welcomed in the sign of keeping, which is a compact statement of what the sign is for.

03Strengths

  • +Sees it through. Stays with a task long after the initial interest has gone, which is when most work actually gets done.
  • +Slows down in a crisis. Decelerates while everyone else speeds up, and is often the reason a panicking group stops making things worse.
  • +Builds real resources. Turns money, skill and material into something that still exists next year.
  • +Sensory precision. Notices the quality of a material, a sound or a meal at a level of detail most people skip.

04Frictions

  • −Late to change. Keeps a job, a habit or a relationship past the point where the evidence stopped supporting it.
  • −Comfort used as an argument. Treats the current arrangement as a reason in itself, without rechecking whether it still works.
  • −Withdraws instead of settling. Goes quiet after being crossed and does not always tell the other person that anything has changed.
  • −Ownership leaks into people. Applies the same keep-and-maintain instinct to a relationship that it applies to a possession.

05Taurus as a Sun sign

The Sun in Taurus builds identity around what it has made durable: an income, a craft, a home, a standard of quality it can defend. It moves about a degree a day, which is why the birth date alone places it, and it is one placement out of roughly forty. A Taurus Sun with Mercury in Gemini and the Moon in Aquarius is not a slow person in any obvious sense.

06Taurus as a Moon sign

The Moon in Taurus settles through the physical and the familiar: a routine that does not change, food, weight, texture, the same chair. What it needs in order to be calm is for conditions to stay put, which makes disruption more expensive than it looks from outside. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so near a boundary this needs the birth time too.

07Taurus rising

Rising in Taurus enters a room without hurrying it: unhurried voice, settled posture, and a slowness that reads as reassurance or as immovability depending on who is waiting. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, so it is a measurement of the time and the place.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Venus, and the two signs she rules

Rulership is a dignity relationship: the planet operates on its own terms in the sign, so nothing has to be translated. Venus rules two signs, and comparing them is the fastest way to see that a planet is a function rather than a personality. In Taurus, Venus decides value by holding a thing and finding out whether it lasts. In Libra, an air sign, Venus decides value by comparing it with the alternative and with somebody else's opinion of it. Same question, two mediums, two very different answers.

Venus takes about a year to circle the zodiac and is retrograde for roughly six weeks every eighteen months, so a retrograde Venus is genuinely uncommon in a birth chart.

09The same sign, twelve different houses

Which house Taurus lands on depends on the birth time and place, and it changes what the holding is applied to. On the sixth cusp it produces a daily routine built to be repeatable rather than impressive. On the ninth it produces convictions held for decades and revised slowly against evidence. On the eleventh it produces few friendships, kept a very long time.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

10Compatibility, honestly

The element rule is aspect geometry in disguise. Taurus is 120 degrees from Virgo and Capricorn, a trine, and 60 degrees from the water signs Cancer and Pisces, a sextile. Scorpio sits at 180 degrees, an opposition, which traditionally describes an axis rather than an incompatibility. The other three fixed signs — Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius — are square or opposite, four positions being held in four different mediums.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Taurus is not

Taurus is not lazy and it is not materialistic. Both readings mistake a slow decision cycle for an absent one. Fixed earth samples the situation infrequently and acts on the sample, which is efficient when conditions are stable and costly when they are not — and the cost is already listed above as being late to change. That is a real price, and it is a different failure from indifference.

The materialism charge misreads the second house. Money sits on that list beside skill and self-worth because they are forms of one thing: what a person can rely on. Paying attention to that is not the same as wanting more of it.
