01Aquarius is not a water sign
The name says water-bearer and the glyph is two waves, and both mislead. Aquarius is fixed air. The water in the image is being poured out of a vessel, and the sign describes the pouring — distributing something to a group — not the liquid. A meaningful share of the people who search for this sign arrive holding that error, so it belongs in the first paragraph.
02First, the dates
Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

03What Aquarius is
Air puts distance between itself and an experience in order to describe it; fixed holds a position through the middle of a season. Fixed air therefore steps back until it can see the system, and keeps that vantage point whether or not the room agrees.
The natural correspondence is the eleventh house: friendship, networks, alliances, and aims held in common with people who are not family — the group seen as a structure rather than a set of attachments, which is the same move the element makes.
04Strengths
- +Sees the design. Describes why a group behaves the way it does instead of only reacting to how it behaves.
- +Holds an unpopular position. Keeps a stance that costs social approval, and can keep it for years.
- +Treats people as equals by default. Speaks the same way to a director and to someone on their first day.
- +Generates the other option. Produces the alternative nobody in the room had thought to consider.
05Frictions
- −Distance at close range. Handles an intimate conflict by analysing it, which leaves the other person alone inside it.
- −Contrary by reflex. Opposes a consensus before checking whether the consensus happens to be right.
- −Principle over person. Applies a rule consistently in the one case where the person in front of it needed an exception.
- −Explains a feeling instead of having it. Converts its own emotional state into a theory and files the theory.
06Aquarius as a Sun sign
The Sun in Aquarius builds identity around a position held on principle and a view of the system from outside it. It is the only placement a birth date supplies on its own, because it spends about a month in each sign. Everything else needs the time and the place.
07Aquarius as a Moon sign
The Moon in Aquarius settles by understanding what is happening, including to itself. Distance is the comfort mechanism, and it works — until the thing needing attention is the feeling rather than the explanation. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so this is not derivable from a date.
08Aquarius rising
Rising in Aquarius comes across as friendly and slightly separate: sociable with many people, quick to abstract, not easily pulled into the mood of a group. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at birth.
The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

09Two rulers that point in opposite directions
Scorpio and Pisces also carry two rulers, but Aquarius has the sharpest version, because Saturn and Uranus are close to opposites.
Saturn is the classical ruler, assigned by the same arithmetic that gave every planet two signs: it holds Capricorn and Aquarius, and it sets limits, keeps commitments and decides what is worth a long cost. Uranus was discovered in 1781 and given Aquarius afterwards; it breaks a pattern once the pattern can no longer be lived with.
Read through Saturn, Aquarius builds a structure for a group and then defends it — constitutions, institutions, rules applied without favour. Read through Uranus, it dismantles the structure because the structure has stopped being liveable. Those are not two shades of one description but opposite operations on the same object, and both are in active use.
There is a second, mechanical difference. Saturn takes about twenty-nine years to circle the zodiac, roughly two and a half in a sign — shared by an age group, but still fast enough to distinguish people. Uranus takes about eighty-four, some seven years a sign, which puts it in the generational category with Neptune and Pluto. So the modern reading gives the rulership to a body whose own sign describes a cohort, and the classical reading does not.
Lizastro prints both rulers and marks which is which. Scorpio carries the same disagreement between Mars and Pluto, and it is worth reading the two together.
10The same sign, twelve different houses
Which house Aquarius falls on depends on the birth time and place. On the fourth cusp, home is run on stated principles rather than inherited habit. On the seventh, partnership is an arrangement between equals with terms that can be discussed. On the tenth, the public role is arguing with the system it works inside — a career in some fields and a liability in others.
The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.
11Compatibility, honestly
The element rule is geometry. Aquarius is 120 degrees from Gemini and Libra, a trine, and 60 degrees from the fire signs Aries and Sagittarius, a sextile. Leo is opposite at 180 degrees — personal authorship against the impersonal group, one axis. Taurus and Scorpio are square, the other two fixed signs.
Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

12What Aquarius is not
Beyond the water error at the top, Aquarius is not the sign of the future. Neither ruler supports it: Saturn is the slowest visible planet and the one most concerned with what endures, and Uranus describes a break with a pattern rather than a direction of travel. A break can go anywhere.
The real cost is the first friction listed above, and it is not futuristic at all: analysing an intimate conflict is a way of standing outside it, which leaves the other person inside on their own.
