Capricorn: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Capricorn is cardinal earth ruled by Saturn, begins at the winter solstice, and carries the one astrological idea with a date attached to it — the Saturn return, which is arithmetic rather than forecast.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Capricorn is

Capricorn begins at the winter solstice: 0° Capricorn is the Sun's southernmost point on the ecliptic, the shortest day, and the turn back. Like the other cardinal signs it opens a season, and like the other earth signs it works with what can be measured, held, maintained and spent.

Cardinal earth initiates through structure. That is the mechanism, and it explains most of what the sign is accused of. Capricorn measures effort against results over long periods and organises life around what will still be standing later, which means the first move it makes is usually to build the thing that will hold the rest up.

The natural correspondence is the tenth house: career, reputation, authority, what a person is known for outside their own home. Mars is exalted here — drive is welcomed in the sign that gives it a structure to be spent on.

03Strengths

  • +Plans in years. Accepts a cost now for a return that is genuinely far away, and does not flinch.
  • +Carries the responsibility. Takes the job nobody wants, on the grounds that somebody has to hold it.
  • +Prices the constraints. Counts time, money and other people's limits before committing rather than after.
  • +Rebuilds after a setback. Responds to a failure by revising the structure rather than lowering the aim.

04Frictions

  • −Worth tied to output. Treats rest as unearned, and counts only the parts of life that produce something.
  • −Withholds from itself. Postpones anything enjoyable until a condition is met, then moves the condition further out.
  • −Goes procedural under strain. Becomes formal with people at exactly the moment warmth would have done more than competence.
  • −Discounts the untested. Dismisses a new method until it has a track record, and sometimes misses the window in which it mattered.

05Capricorn as a Sun sign

The Sun in Capricorn builds identity around what it has been trusted with and what it has built that outlasted the effort. The Sun holds a sign for about a month, which is why a birth date fixes it — and it is the only placement a birth date fixes. A Capricorn Sun with a Sagittarius Moon and Gemini rising is not a reserved person by any obvious measure.

06Capricorn as a Moon sign

The Moon in Capricorn settles through competence and control of the conditions. What calms it is a plan that holds; what unsettles it is depending on someone else's follow-through. Comfort has to be earned before it is accepted, which delays it indefinitely. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days.

07Capricorn rising

Rising in Capricorn presents as older than it is: measured speech, few unnecessary claims, and a reserve read as competence and occasionally as distance. The Ascendant is the degree of the ecliptic on the eastern horizon at birth.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Saturn, and the one date astrology can actually compute

Rulership is a dignity relationship: Saturn works on its own terms in Capricorn, so nothing needs translating. It sets limits, keeps commitments, and decides what is worth a long cost — it asks what a person is willing to be responsible for over years.

It also takes about twenty-nine and a half years to circle the zodiac, and that number produces the Saturn return — the moment Saturn comes back to the exact degree it occupied at birth. It happens at roughly twenty-nine or thirty, again near fifty-eight or fifty-nine, and a third time close to eighty-eight for those who reach it.

The reason this matters to a product like this one is that the date is arithmetic. Given a birth moment and an ephemeris, the return can be computed to the hour, and it is the same calculation for everybody. What the return means for a particular person is a separate question, and it is one this product does not answer with a prediction. The number is computable. The event is not.

Saturn spends about four and a half months of each year retrograde, so it is common in charts. Natally that tends to describe authority assembled internally rather than modelled well from outside, which makes the standard both stricter and more private.

09The same sign, twelve different houses

Which house Capricorn falls on depends on the birth time and place. On the third cusp, speech commits only to what it can back — reliable in a contract, withholding at a dinner. On the fifth, creative work is built slowly and judged by whether it lasts. On the seventh, partnership is a long agreement whose terms are taken seriously by one party whether or not they were stated.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

10Compatibility, honestly

The element rule is geometry. Capricorn is 120 degrees from Taurus and Virgo, a trine, and 60 degrees from the water signs Scorpio and Pisces, a sextile. Cancer is opposite at 180 degrees — the private base against the public standing, which is one axis and not a verdict. Aries and Libra are square, the other two cardinal signs.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Capricorn is not

Capricorn is not cold. Cardinal earth initiates through structure, and the caricature reads planning as an absence of feeling. Building something that will still hold in ten years is a way of caring about what happens in ten years, and the fact that it does not announce itself as care is a fact about the medium rather than about the temperature.

The real cost is above and it is more specific: going procedural under strain. Reaching for competence at the moment somebody needed warmth is a failure of instrument selection, not of feeling, and it is expensive because it happens exactly when it is least affordable.
