01First, the dates
Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Gemini is
Every other body in a chart describes something a person wants. Mercury describes how they process: how information comes in, how it is sorted, and what it turns into on the way out. It is the only body in the set that is about method rather than appetite, and Gemini is Mercury running that method through air.
Air puts distance between itself and an experience in order to describe it. Mutable closes a season and distributes what it collected — Gemini ends spring and hands it to summer. Together they run the process wide rather than deep: many inputs, quickly compared, held loosely. Gemini takes in more information than it can act on and keeps sorting it out loud.
Wide is a bandwidth choice: what goes to breadth does not go to the second pass. That is a trade rather than a defect.
One mechanical fact is worth carrying: Mercury never appears more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so in any chart it sits in the Sun's sign or one of the two adjacent to it. A Gemini Sun has Mercury in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and no other option exists.
03Strengths
- +Learns fast. Reaches a working understanding of an unfamiliar subject in the time others spend finding the right book.
- +Translates. Explains a specialist idea to someone outside the field without flattening it into nonsense.
- +Opens a conversation. Finds the first question for a stranger, which is a practised skill rather than a mood.
- +Updates on evidence. Drops a position when the facts move, with less defensiveness than most.
04Frictions
- −Leaves at the repetition. Exits a subject at the point where it stops being novel and starts requiring the same work twice.
- −Talks past the decision. Keeps examining options after the moment a choice was needed, and calls the delay thinking.
- −Restless with what is working. Treats routine as a threat, including routine that is holding something together.
- −Words outrun commitment. Says things that are true in the moment and not binding later, which other people file as promises.
05Gemini as a Sun sign
The Sun in Gemini builds identity around knowing things and connecting them: the person who has read the other side of the argument and can explain one field to another. Because the Sun moves about a degree a day, its sign is the one placement a birth date settles on its own — which is why it is also the one most often mistaken for the whole chart.
06Gemini as a Moon sign
The Moon in Gemini settles by naming the problem. What calms it is language: talking it through, writing it down, hearing it described back. An unspoken feeling stays unresolved longer here than an articulated one, and the risk is that the description substitutes for the thing described. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day and changes sign every two and a half days, so near a boundary it needs the birth time.
07Gemini rising
Rising in Gemini meets people with a question rather than a statement and fills the silences, which makes for easy company and a hard read. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at birth, so unlike the Sun it is a fact about the clock, not the calendar.
The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Mercury, and the two signs it rules
Being ruled by a planet is a dignity relationship: it works on its own terms in that sign, without translation. Mercury rules two, Gemini and Virgo, and the pair is the cleanest demonstration in the zodiac that a planet is a function and a sign is the medium it runs in. Mercury in air circulates information; Mercury in earth corrects it. The operation is identical — take in, sort, pass on — and the output is unrecognisably different.
Mercury turns retrograde three or four times a year, so roughly one person in five is born with it retrograde. Natally that describes thinking that runs inward first — revisiting, rephrasing — rather than anything malfunctioning.
09The same sign, twelve different houses
The house Gemini falls on depends on the birth time and place, and it decides what the sorting is applied to. On the fourth cusp, a home organised around talk, where things are settled by discussion. On the seventh, partnership chosen for conversation, where being interesting outranks being similar. On the tenth, a public role of explaining, teaching or carrying messages between groups.
The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.
10Compatibility, honestly
The element shorthand is geometry. Gemini is 120 degrees from Libra and Aquarius, a trine, and 60 degrees from the fire signs Aries and Leo, a sextile. Sagittarius sits opposite at 180 degrees — the same subject, scope, approached from the far end. The other mutable signs, Virgo and Pisces, are 90 degrees away, the aspect the tradition treats as friction.
Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Gemini is not
Gemini is not two-faced. That claim is a pun on the glyph that hardened into a personality description, and there is nothing in the placement about dishonesty. The twins in the image are Castor and Pollux, one mortal and one not — a story about two natures held at once, a statement about range rather than deceit.
There is a real cost nearby, already in the list above: words outrun commitment. Something true at the time and not binding afterwards is a genuine problem for the people who heard it — and it is not lying. Collapsing the two makes the actual friction harder to see.
