01First, the dates
Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Scorpio is
Scorpio is the fixed sign of autumn — mid-season, where the work is to hold rather than to open or hand over. Water registers a situation as a feeling before a fact. Fixed water therefore describes a refusal to let a process go before it has finished: the reading is taken, and then kept.
Scorpio goes to the part of a situation nobody is saying out loud, and then stays there. Both halves matter: noticing the undercurrent is common enough, and remaining with it after it becomes unpleasant is what the fixed mode adds.
The natural correspondence is the eighth house: what is held jointly and cannot be settled alone — debt, inheritance, intimacy, the crises that force a change of terms. The Moon is in fall here, opposite its exaltation in Taurus: the tradition's way of saying the need-and-comfort function has an awkward time in a sign built for not letting go.
03Strengths
- +Sees the undercurrent. Reads the motive behind a polite sentence, and is usually right about it.
- +Stays through the bad part. Does not leave a person or a problem at the point where it stops being interesting and starts being unpleasant.
- +Keeps a confidence. Holds other people's information without trading it for position.
- +Concentrates force. Applies sustained pressure to one target rather than distributing effort across several.
04Frictions
- −Tests instead of asking. Sets small loyalty tests rather than asking a direct question, and the other person never learns they were being examined.
- −Withholding as leverage. Uses silence and information as instruments inside a relationship.
- −Keeps the record open. Retains a complete account of an injury long after acting on it could improve anything.
- −Ends rather than renegotiates. Cuts a connection off outright at the point where the terms could have been changed instead.
05Scorpio as a Sun sign
The Sun in Scorpio builds identity around what it has understood at close range and not looked away from. The Sun moves about a degree a day and is the one placement a birth date alone can supply — which is why a sun-sign description of this sign, of all twelve, works from the least evidence.
06Scorpio as a Moon sign
The Moon in Scorpio settles through knowing where it stands, in detail, and will not settle on a partial answer. What calms it is information rather than reassurance, and that search has no obvious stopping point. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days.
07Scorpio rising
Rising in Scorpio gives little away early: steady eye contact, few unnecessary words, and a reserve people read as depth or as threat depending on their own history. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at birth — the clock and the map, not the calendar.
The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Two rulers, and why the argument was never settled
This is where the rulership table stops agreeing with itself, and the disagreement is worth more than either answer.
The classical scheme was arithmetic. Seven bodies were visible; the Sun and Moon took one sign each, Leo and Cancer, and the five remaining planets took two apiece, one either side of that axis. Mars therefore holds Aries and Scorpio. Nothing psychological was claimed by it — it distributed twelve signs across seven bodies without a remainder.
Pluto was discovered in 1930 and given Scorpio afterwards, on the argument that the sign describes something Mars does not.
Both readings survive because they are not about the same thing. Mars is applied force: how effort is spent, what will be defended, a two-year cycle, a personal body whose sign says something about an individual. Pluto is involuntary change: what a person cannot be moderate about, a 248-year cycle, up to two decades in one sign. That difference is the argument. Reading Scorpio through Pluto imports a generational body into a personal description, shared by everyone born across roughly twenty years. Reading it through Mars keeps the description personal and drops the depth the modern assignment was invented to name.
Lizastro prints both and marks which is which. Resolving it silently would be choosing a school on the reader's behalf, and the chart would look more certain than the tradition is.
09The same sign, twelve different houses
Which house Scorpio falls on depends on the birth time and place. On the third cusp, everyday conversation turns toward the thing not being said — uncomfortable at a dinner, valuable in an investigation. On the sixth, the work other people would rather not handle. On the eleventh, few alliances, held closely and for a long time.
The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.
10Compatibility, honestly
The element rule is geometry. Scorpio is 120 degrees from Cancer and Pisces, a trine, and 60 degrees from the earth signs Virgo and Capricorn, a sextile. Taurus is opposite at 180 degrees: what is mine against what is ours, one axis from both ends. Leo and Aquarius are square, the other two fixed signs.
Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Scorpio is not
Scorpio is not dark. Fixed water describes a refusal to let go of a process before it finishes, and the internet has dressed that up as menace. Staying with something after it stops being pleasant is what makes this sign useful: it is the same mechanism behind keeping a confidence and behind finishing work everyone else abandoned.
The actual costs are the four above, and none is atmospheric. Testing instead of asking, withholding as leverage, keeping the record open, ending rather than renegotiating — these are done to specific people, and they cost because they work.
