The aspect between the signs
Like the semisextile, a quincunx joins signs in aversion: different elements, different modalities, and no aspect in the whole-sign scheme. It is read as a call to adjust, not as harmony or as conflict.
Elements and modalities
Fire is hot and dry, water cold and moist: they share no quality, and the classical scheme counts them as the most opposed pair of elements. Water can put out fire, and fire can evaporate water.
One sign starts and the other sustains: a cardinal sign opens, a fixed sign holds.
The rulers
Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio. The planet is the same and is expressed through two different temperaments, so the shared drive can look unlike itself from the outside.
Mars stands for: drive, anger, initiative, courage.
Modern astrology also assigns Pluto to Scorpio. The reading here uses the traditional rulers; the modern ones are in the table.
The two signs together
Aries tends to bring initiative: it says what it wants and starts before it is certain. It tends to need room to act without explaining each step, and a direct answer.
Scorpio tends to bring depth: loyalty, focus and willingness to stay with what is difficult. It tends to need trust that is shown rather than asked for, and privacy that is respected.
Aries fights in the open and moves on; Scorpio says less and remembers longer. Both are forceful, one visibly and one behind closed doors.
What tends to come easily
- Difference keeps curiosity alive and can teach each person something unfamiliar.
- Each has something the other lacks: warmth on one side, depth on the other.
- Starting and keeping are both covered.
- A common drive sits underneath the different styles.
What tends to cost something
- There is no common starting point, so adjusting is repeated work and patience can run out.
- The same intensity is felt by one as too much and by the other as too little.
- The starter can feel held back, and the sustainer can feel pushed.
- The same need is expressed differently, and each can read the other’s version as a failing.
What two Sun signs cannot say
Two Sun signs are a small part of two charts. The Moon, Venus, Mars, the rising sign and the houses of each person shape how a relationship goes, and so do age, circumstance and choice.
The aspect here is counted between signs, not between degrees. Two people born at the start and at the end of the same sign stand differently from two born at the same degree, and this page cannot tell which applies.
To compare two actual people, the synastry tool takes both birth dates and shows the aspects between the planets.
