Sagittarius: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Sagittarius is mutable fire ruled by Jupiter, whose twelve-year cycle is the first one long enough that the placement starts describing a cohort as much as a person. Where the line between personal and generational actually falls.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Sagittarius is

Sagittarius is the mutable sign of autumn: the position that closes a season by distributing what it collected. Fire commits on appetite. Mutable fire therefore keeps enlarging the frame and changing direction on new information — the wider context, the further place, the more general principle — and moves as soon as the frame has moved.

The natural correspondence is the ninth house: long journeys, foreign places, higher study, law, belief — the far context, the framework a person judges near things by.

Jupiter rules it. Jupiter looks for meaning and scope and builds the case for saying yes, which is a description of a method rather than of an outcome.

03Strengths

  • +Widens the question. Points out that the argument in the room is a small instance of a larger one, and is often right.
  • +Says the avoided thing. Puts the unpopular observation on the table at little cost to itself.
  • +Travels well. Adapts to unfamiliar places, languages and people with unusually little friction.
  • +Holds the point of it. Keeps a sense of why the work matters when the detail of it gets grim.

04Frictions

  • −Blunt without repair. Delivers the honest observation and moves on before noticing what it cost the person who heard it.
  • −Promises at the size it likes. Commits to more than the calendar holds, because the plan was exciting at the moment of describing it.
  • −Impatient with the particular. Skips the specific fact that would complicate the general theory.
  • −Leaves before the consequence. Moves on to the next thing exactly when the current one starts requiring maintenance.

05Sagittarius as a Sun sign

The Sun in Sagittarius builds identity around the frame it uses: the person who has been somewhere else, read the other tradition, and will say what the argument is actually about. The Sun is the one placement a birth date can fix on its own, because it holds a sign for a month.

06Sagittarius as a Moon sign

The Moon in Sagittarius settles by having somewhere to go and something to mean. Confinement is the uncomfortable state, and the response to distress is movement — a trip, a plan, a bigger explanation. What that skips is the small factual conversation that would have settled it. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days.

07Sagittarius rising

Rising in Sagittarius comes across as informal and expansive: generalising early, laughing easily, taking up conversational space that people find either warming or careless. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at birth.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08Jupiter, and where a placement stops being about you

Rulership is a dignity relationship: Jupiter works on its own terms in Sagittarius, with nothing to translate. But Jupiter is also the body where a distinction worth carrying through the whole chart first becomes visible.

Jupiter circles the zodiac in about twelve years, so it spends roughly a year in each sign. That is the first cycle long enough that the sign describes a cohort as much as a person: everyone born within about twelve months shares it. Compare the rest of the set. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, the Sun every month, Mercury and Venus in weeks, Mars in about two — personal placements, on which two people born the same year usually differ.

Past Jupiter the effect grows. Saturn takes about twenty-nine years, two and a half per sign. Uranus takes eighty-four, some seven a sign. Neptune spends fourteen years in a sign and Pluto up to twenty. By then the sign is a fact about a generation and the house carries the personal reading — which is why this product marks those three as generational rather than printing them as if they described an individual.

So the honest reading of a Jupiter sign sits in the middle: less specific than the Moon, far more specific than Neptune. Jupiter is retrograde about four months of every year, which means roughly a third of charts carry it retrograde.

09The same sign, twelve different houses

Which house Sagittarius falls on depends on the birth time and place. On the second cusp, resources are spent on scope: travel, study, the larger version of the plan. On the fourth, home is a base to leave from rather than a place to stay in. On the eighth, what is shared gets approached as a question of principle, which is clarifying in a negotiation and abrasive in a bereavement.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

10Compatibility, honestly

The element rule is aspect geometry. Sagittarius is 120 degrees from Aries and Leo, a trine, and 60 degrees from the air signs Libra and Aquarius, a sextile. Gemini is opposite at 180 degrees — the near context against the far one, which is one axis rather than two enemies. Virgo and Pisces are square, the other two mutable signs.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

11What Sagittarius is not

Sagittarius is not blunt to the point of rudeness as a matter of design. Mutable fire changes direction on new information, and that includes saying the new information out loud as soon as it arrives. The caricature confuses a short interval between noticing and speaking with an absence of filter.

The genuine cost is the first friction above, and it is more precise than rudeness: the observation lands, and the person who made it has already moved on to the next frame before registering what it did. The problem is not the sentence. It is the missing minute afterwards.
