Leo: traits, ruling planet, and where it sits in a chart

Leo is fixed fire ruled by the Sun, which makes it the best place to explain what a star sign actually is — one placement out of roughly forty, and the only one a birth date can supply on its own.

01First, the dates

Those dates are approximate. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign to the next shifts by up to a day and a half from year to year, so if you were born near a boundary the table is not enough. Find out which sign the Sun was actually in, in about thirty seconds.

02What Leo is

Leo is the fixed sign of summer, which places it in the middle of a season — past the opening and before the handover, where the job is to sustain what is already running. Fire is the element that commits on appetite. Fixed fire is therefore sustained output: not the first burst, but the thing that keeps burning after the first burst is over.

Leo puts a personal signature on whatever it touches and wants that authorship to be visible. The visibility is not an add-on. Authorship that nobody can attribute is not authorship, and a sign organised around making work identifiable has to care who sees it.

Its ruler is the Sun, which is unusual enough to be worth a section of its own.

03Strengths

  • +Warms a room. Raises the level of a group by being visibly interested in the people in it.
  • +Puts a name to a decision. Takes the credit and the blame together, which is what makes anyone accountable for anything.
  • +Generous without accounting. Spends time, money and attention on people and does not keep a ledger of it.
  • +Sustains a creative act. Stays with one piece of work long enough for it to carry a recognisable style rather than a trend.

04Frictions

  • −Needs the response. Loses conviction in good work when nobody reacts, and adjusts the work rather than the audience.
  • −Hears dissent as disloyalty. Takes a criticism of the plan as a withdrawal of affection.
  • −Occupies the space. Takes up room in a conversation without registering who stopped speaking.
  • −Pride delays the repair. Waits for the other person to move first after a rupture, sometimes for years, while calling it principle.

05The Sun, and what a star sign actually is

The Sun rules Leo, which makes this the right article to say plainly what the Sun is in a chart.

It is not a planet, and astrology does not treat it as one. It is the reference point: the body the chart is arranged around, and the part of a person that wants to be particular rather than average. In Leo it works without translation, because being particular in a way other people can see is what the sign is for.

The mechanism behind the phrase "star sign" is arithmetic. The Sun moves about one degree a day along the ecliptic, so it spends roughly a month in each thirty-degree sign. That is slow enough that a birth date alone fixes it, and it is the only placement in the chart that is true of a birth date alone. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days. The Ascendant changes every two hours. Mercury, Venus and Mars all need more than a date to place.

So a sun-sign column addresses a twelfth of the population because it uses the one variable a calendar supplies. That is a bandwidth limit rather than a fraud, and it is worth knowing which of the forty-odd factors it works from.

One more fact, since it is a common data error rather than an astrological condition: the Sun is never retrograde. A chart that shows it retrograde has a bug.

06Leo as a Moon sign

The Moon describes what settles a person rather than what they aim at. In Leo it settles through being responded to: warmth returned, work acknowledged, a place in the room that is clearly theirs. The need is for recognition rather than for admiration, and the two are easy to confuse from outside. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so this placement is not derivable from a date.

07Leo rising

Rising in Leo is noticed on arrival whether or not that was the intention: posture, voice and dress carry more signal than average, and people form an early opinion. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon at birth, so it depends on the time and place rather than the date.

The rising sign depends on the birth time and moves a degree every four minutes — the odds that it matches your Sun sign are one in twelve. Compute your big three: Sun, Moon and Rising, each with its degree.

08The same sign, twelve different houses

Which house Leo falls on depends on the birth time and place, and it decides what gets the signature. On the sixth cusp it puts the authorship into routine work, where a maintained system carries a recognisable style. On the eighth it handles what is shared openly, stating terms other people leave implicit. On the twelfth it does the same work out of view, which is the hardest version: the placement wants attribution and the house withholds it.

The same sign does different work depending on which house it falls in, and which house that is comes out of a calculation involving your birth time and place. Draw the whole chart: twelve houses, ten bodies, and every aspect between them.

09Compatibility, honestly

The element shorthand is aspect geometry between whole signs. Leo is 120 degrees from Aries and Sagittarius, a trine, and 60 degrees from the air signs Gemini and Libra, a sextile. Aquarius sits opposite at 180 degrees — personal authorship against the impersonal group, one axis from both ends. Taurus and Scorpio are square, three fixed positions held at once.

Sign compatibility reduces two charts to two points. The real comparison looks at every aspect between two whole charts — which body contacts which, at what orb. That comparison is what Circle is built for, and each person keeps their own chart and decides what to share.

10What Leo is not

Leo is not arrogant. Fixed fire describes sustained output, and the caricature reads the sustaining as a demand for attention. Keeping one piece of work going long enough for it to develop a style requires believing it is worth continuing, and from outside that belief looks like self-regard whether or not any is present.

The genuine cost is listed above: conviction that depends on a response. A sign that needs the reaction in order to keep going will adjust the work toward whatever gets reacted to, which is a real risk to the work. That is a different problem from vanity.
