The aspect between the signs
Opposite signs share a modality and have complementary elements, fire with air or earth with water. The tradition reads them as a polarity: each person holds what the other leaves out.

Earth and water share cold. Water softens earth and earth gives water a shape; the tradition reads the pairing as steady and caring.
